The News on Trump: Same Old Same Old
Everything we're watching is predictable. It's getting boring.
I’ve been taking a few days break from the Trump show and I have to say, it’s refreshing. It’s also enlightening. And strange, considering my last few posts have been all rah rah let’s do this! No stopping now! Come on!
But I began to notice that so much of what I was writing were repeats of things I’d written before. I have nothing new to add because I’m not seeing anything new. Everything that is happening, right down to Trump’s stupid SOTU speech, is predictable. We knew what he was going to say long before he said it. And sure enough, he said it all. Badly. So badly it’s all they’re talking about today. (No, I didn’t watch it. I’m no fool.)
Let’s face it: The reporting world, mainstream or otherwise, loves to talk about Trump. We’ve had more than a decade of it, nonstop, with no end in sight.
We know when we fight back that Trump will play the silly spoiled kid who throws a tantrum because nobody on our side likes him, and he’ll say dumb things no president in his right mind would say. Because Trump is not in his right mind.
Predictably, the Republicans pretend they don’t notice. Predictably, they’ll back him almost 100%, no matter what he says or does.
Predictably, the press will downplay it, only seldom throwing out the slightest bit of heat, but no real fire. No real consequences. The Democrats will holler and tsk tsk, but they take no real action. Not enough to make even a molehill’s bit of difference.
In state contests, Democratic outliers will win a few elections. Enough for us to brag out loud, but they’re flutters, not earthquakes. News today, gone tomorrow.
Everyone on our side is already predicting a midterm win for the Democrats. We’ve been here before. We don’t always win the midterms. But we need to say we will.
We’re still looking for leaders. Some Democrats look promising, while some let us down just when we think we can have faith in them. This, too, happens all the time. We’ve been looking at this same pattern since Trump’s first mad debacle in 2016. Nobody is ever good enough for us. Predictable.
On the plus side, we’ve found leaders among our own independent journalists and pundits, and they’re keeping us going. We don’t know what we’d do without them. They spend hours every day finding facts, sharing news, giving us what we need. Building up our hopes. And we’re grateful. But their words take a back seat to antics and irrelevancy.
And nothing changes.
The truth is, the country is out of control and as much as we would like to control it, we can’t. We can only report on it. Watch and report. Again and again.
The same news, over and over again. Trump said… Trump did… The Republicans… The Democrats… Protests… the courts… ICE… concentration camps…
It’s all big news, I get that. But without some kind of resolution, it’s not just tiring, it’s tiresome. And that’s where I am right now. There are people in this country who are hurting so badly they may never recover. There is a regime attempting to destroy our entire country and they’re not even hiding it. People are dying because of them. People are getting away with murder right before our eyes. Children are being kept from food and medicine and safety because of them. Innocent people are being flown out of the country to places they’ve never been and don’t deserve to be, and now there are so many, the news about them is a one-day scoop.
The lies coming from the Trump regime are so fast and furious we can’t keep up but nobody addresses them much, except to say they’re lies. Not every time because repeating every one would be too overwhelming. That’s how many lies there are.
Then there are the Epstein files. We know Donald Trump is heavily involved. Women who were girls then have accused him of rape and there appears to be credible proof. We know that and we keep repeating it because all we can do is shed light on each new revelation, as if this time it’ll be the one that will take him down. But it isn’t. It never is.
Trump is the star attraction, on stage but behind see-through barriers because nothing can hurt him. We know that. That’s why we’re counting on the midterms. Because it’s all we have. But we’ll keep talking as if something’s coming, something’s right around the corner. Stay tuned for breaking news that isn’t breaking news but just more of the same. Looks promising, but wait…
…Never mind.
So I took a break. I didn’t read much news for a few days, and when I looked in this morning, I saw what I thought I would. More of the same. Almost exactly the same kind of things I was reading when I tuned out. Different words but the same names, the same predictions, the same calls to action, and the same petty name-calling, just to get a crazy, violent dictator’s goat.
What happened in Minneapolis was terrible, and then it became a miracle. Minneapolis stepped up and did something, and when the entire country rallied in protests that were astounding in scope, I thought it might change everything. But it didn’t. Not yet. It still might if we keep at it, but we’re back to business as usual again. Minneapolis is yesterday’s news. Rallies are barely mentioned.
We’re back to it being All Trump All the Time, reporting on everything from his tantrums to his name-calling to his threats and his phony lawsuits. Every day he comes up with some new thing to scare us. He is the star of this show and I’m getting bored.
Yes, bored. So I took a break. And nothing changed.
Predictable.
I know I should end this by saying something like, “But it doesn’t have to be this way”. I should go back to rallying, to building up our hopes, to being that person who won’t give up. And I will. But right now this is how it is and I want to be honest.
If all we can ever do is talk about Trump and not about the actions we should be taking to stop the madness and fix the country, Trump wins. This is what he wants. It’s why he does these things. So he can stay in the spotlight, no matter what. He knows he’s immune from it all. He can say anything he wants.
And so can I. I don’t know where this is going but I think those days away were trying to tell me something. Predictable isn’t good enough. Same old same old isn’t good enough.
So I’m working on it. 💙

You always have an interesting perspective. Wouldn’t it be nice if America ignored Trump for a few days just like you did. Maybe they would realize they should stop giving him space.
As I've aged, now in my 80's, I have tried not to wind myself up over things of which I have no control. I don't have a TV. I do listen to NPR, but not every day. I read my local paper and the NY Times. I haven't always been successful about not getting wound up, but I don't accept that as defeat. Tomorrow is another day.
Side note: I went to the store the other day and found that I could buy two oranges for $3.00! Needless to say, I'll figure out how to live without oranges for a while.
Ramona, keep sharing your perspective.
