Remarkable post. Unfortunately, the repugnant republicans are deaf, dumb and obviously numb to the damage they each are contributing too.
We will NOT surrender our brain cells to this horrific chapter in history. Write about it, journal about it, share with the younger generations who will be left to reconstruct the country.
Excellent. I damn well wish the people who really need to hear and heed your words actually gave a damn about the points you're making. Sadly, they seem all-in with the Trump/Musk fascist movement, which is both dangerous and terrifying.
We're watching, like mouth-agape viewers of past, horrible history, as ignorance, hate, and demagoguery work to shove democracy and compassion out the door. I pray to all that is holy and sacred that citizens of conscience, and elected officials who still give a damn about such things as compassion and democracy, stand up, loud, firm, and intractable, against them.
Thank you for your beautifully articulated perspective.
They’re also alienating their old friends and allies in favour of new rightwing friends in Russia, Hungary, Germany etc… have insulted and threatened old safe trading partners who are now forging new alliances and will never forgive the betrayal, or trust the usa again.
I do hope you’re wrong about never trusting the US again. Administrations come and go. Our loyalties don’t depend on our current rogue government. We Americans hold dear our relationships with our allies. We’ll get through this.
I don't see respect and trust returning for at least a generation. There would have to be successive, strong, wise and empathic governments before trust is earned. Again, I preface that by saying I'm an outsider who sees an alliance with the USA crumbling before her eyes and hopes the new international alliances are strong, profound and infinite.
I think one thing we still have going for us is our long history of unbroken alliances. Nothing like this has ever happened except under the madman who, I'm sure the world knows, is an anomaly. A temporary villain who is not yet a victor.
'The world is looking to us for answers...' No. They're not.
I see much reporting from countries outside of the USA. Simply, the world is now getting on with building firewalls, alliances and protections. If the USA implodes, then the rest of the world will hopefully have new economy protections and alliances that might prove something rather powerful for the future.
At the very least, I hope that Trump, Musk and the Brownshirt MAGAs discover that they're legends only in their own lunchboxes.
You're right, Prue. Since January 20, the world is probably looking at us like we're crazy people, brainwashed and locked in a cult. More likely they're hoping we'll come to our senses before things REALLY get out of hand!
It's been less than a month and the worst we could have imagined is already happening. Still, there is pushback at nearly every level. We're fighting back and the world is watching.
How I wish those that need to hear this would read your posting but fear they don't follow Substack. I am sickened in heart by our government and although almost half the country voted them in, I think that many are now horrified by their actions. "Wade in, don't wallow"!!
Our voices do matter. From time immemorial our voices have mattered. We take our energy and our solace from those who have been where we are before and have lived to tell about it. Now we carry the torch. We pass it on.
Ramona, I appreciate the way you name this directly. Power without responsibility is dangerous, and loyalty to one man at the cost of a nation is a choice—one with consequences far beyond the U.S. What happens there affects all of us. Silence does not erase the truth, and looking away does not undo the harm.
I'm deeply angry with Republicans right now which is amazing given how low my expectations were for them. Yet they still managed to go even lower. I'm eager for strong leadership from the Democrats. Until such time as I see that, I continue to call my senators and US Rep almost daily. I hope everyone else is too. As 1 longtime DOJ lawyer put it: pipes under pressure burst.
We’re going to need to stay angry. Loudly, aggressively angry. We can’t let up. Our strength needs to keep building. Our numbers need to keep growing. Our leaders need assurance that we’re behind them when they take up the fight. We need to see this as a war.
Boo Yah, Ramona‼️
Your best yet❗️
Sharp as a tack-
Thank you🇺🇸

Protect your mental health, daily.

I hope so. We’re just feeling pretty sad, hurt and angry up here
I know. I understand. Keep that anger going, please. It helps!
I suspect the USA might have to work very hard to prove it can be trusted again, Ramona.
It’ll never happen under Republicans again. They’ve blown it. They’re done everywhere but here.
And the Democrats are going to have to groom strong, gutsy leadership. People like Mexico’s president. And of course Zelensky.

I wouldn't count us out just yet.
Brave words Ramona. You're nailing it.
I will take issue with one point though:
'The world is looking to us for answers...' No. They're not.

We'd better make it good.

I want to believe that our voices matter and that the system will work once again...this is beautifully voiced. J
