Ongoing List of Writers in the War Against Fascism

They're on our side, working to save democracy, giving us the tools we'll need to fight alongside them.

Here are some of the people we can count on to bring us news, background information, inspiration…whatever we’re going to need in the days ahead as we fight the Trump regime for the soul of our country.

Their knowledge, their insight, their ethics, their integrity, their commitment in the face of an uphill battle—that’s why they’re on this list.

We’ll need to support them in any way we can, up to and including paying them for their services. If that’s not possible, please help by reading them, by responding, by sharing their words, by letting them know you appreciate them.

This list is for sharing, so please do that. Let me know of any others you might think should be on the list. I’ll add them if I can. If I don’t agree, I’ll let you know why.

(If this list looks Substack-heavy it’s because it started life in a Substack essay, but I’m all for adding any other source from any other outlet if they fit the bill here.)

I’ve put them in alphabetical order, excluding the word ‘the’ in most cases. I’ll warn you that some are behind paywalls. This list is ever-changing, so let’s keep it going. Let’s keep it current. Adam Kinzinger - Adam Kinzinger. Former Republican congressman, now a passionate anti-Trumper. He’s been on the inside. He knows those people.

America, America - Steven Beschloss, author of “Adrift” and a long-time contributor to major news sources, focuses on the dangers ahead for our democracy.

America’s Fractured Politics - Mark Mansour, a DC attorney and longtime Democratic activist brings needed insight into the mess we’re in.

American Crisis - Margaret Sullivan, former WaPo columnist currently writing at the Guardian, gives us scathing insight into American journalism and throws in some culture for R&R.

Authors for Democracy - Aimee Liu and others provide a sounding board for authors working together to save America from the fascists.

The Banter - A newsletter from Ben Cohen, Bob Cesca, and others. Consistent eye-openers

The Beautiful Mess - John Pavlovitz. This heathen goes to this former pastor for inspiration and solace.

The Borowitz Report - Andy Borowitz. Because we’re going to need to laugh, too.

The Breakdown- Allison Gill of Mueller, She Wrote. She translates legalese for lay people. That’s most of us.

Brian Tyler Cohen - Brian Tyler Cohen. Sharp political commentary. Partnering now with Marc Elias at Democracy Docket. More power to them.

The Bulwark - A mix of politicos from both parties joining up to save democracy.

Chop Wood, Carry Water - Jessica Craven. Always a treat, often a revelation.

Civil Discourse - Joyce Vance knows the laws of the land. Her insight is invaluable.

Constant Commoner - Ramona Grigg. I’m right here. I’m working hard to do what I can. Subscribe, share, join in. It takes an army.

The Contrarian - A new pro-democracy magazine-style outlet headed by Jennifer Rubin and Norm Eisen. With names like Joyce Vance, Lawrence Tribe, Kathleen Sullivan, Ruth Ben Ghiat, Sherrilyn Ifill, Jonathan Alter, and Andy Borowitz. With more to come.

Counter-Narcissist Intelligence - Sam Ray shines a light on narcissists, sociopaths, and psychopaths, including the ones in control of us now.

The Daily Elm - Ariella Elm keeps track of the positive actions of state and federal Democrats and reports daily on their successes.

The Dean’s Report - Dean Obeidallah. Always thoughtful. Always quotable.

Democracy Docket - A newsletter run by Marc Elias, the lawyer who won 60+ cases for the 2020 election. Another great go-to for inspiration and law advice.

Dispatches From A Collapsing State - Jared Yates Sexton. A political analyst and author. Books and essays warning of the very things that are here now.

The Dworkin Report - Scott Dworkin provides much needed insight into the current goings-on.

Enough Already - D. Earl Stephens. His outrage is perfection.

Everyone is Entitled to My Own Opinion - Jeff Tiedrich has a potty mouth, a delicious sense of humor, and a handle on the bad guys.

Freedom Academy - Asha Rangappa. Former FBI agent, now at Yale, Asha offers a free course on disinformation, saying she wants to “create a community around understanding the threat of disinformation and its impact on democracy.”

For Such a Time as This - Andra Watkins. She grew up in a Christian Nationalist church. Now she dissects them with full authority.

The Garden of Forking Paths - Brian Klass teaches global politics at University College London. He’s an expert on despots. Sorely needed right now.

The Gen Z Perspective - Dash Dobrofsky shines a light on the good works coming from the next generation.

The Good in Us - Mary L. Trump, Donald’s niece. She’s got the goods on him.

The Hartmann Report - Thom Hartmann has such a way with words. I learn something every time I read him.

Heads Up News - Dan Froomkin, head of Press Watch, keeps an eye on the Trump regime so you don’t have to.

Letters From an American - Heather Cox Richardson writing every day in her own inimitable way. Always worth reading.

LOLGOP The Cause - Jason Sattler sees The Cause as every virtuous fight. Compelling writing.

Lucian Truscott - Lucian Truscott IV. I love his writing. Simple as that.

Meidas Plus - A pro-democracy media outlet that consistently surpasses Fox News internet numbers. They’re a force.

Open Windows - Ann Telnaes. Former WaPo cartoonist who quit for ethical reasons. Her work speaks for itself.

The Parnas Perspective - Gen Z’er Aaron Parnas brings thoughtful insight to today’s problems.

Paul Krugman - Paul Krugman. Well known economist and former NYT columnist now at Substack.

Politicus USA - Jason Easley and Sarah Jones. Pertinent politics, always interesting. (Paywalled.)

Popular Information - Judd Legum and his team bring experience and ‘news for people who give a damn’.

The Power - Carole Cadwalledr, investigative journalist with the Guardian/Observer. She calls them ‘Broligarchs’ and ‘Broverlords’. She knows them well.

The Present Age - Parker Molloy. Commentary by the award-winning former editor-at-large of Media Matters for America.

Proof - Seth Abramson. Always smart and thought-provoking.

ProPublica - Using the moral force of investigative journalism to spur reform

Public Notice - Aaron Rupar. My go-to when nothing is making sense.

The Pugilist - Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez She exposed Epstein’s Zorro Ranch, was targeted and felt forced to leave the country. She writes from outside it now, with as much truth and fervor.

Real Patriotism - Terry Moran. Veteran newsman moves to Substack and is now free to be him.

Robert Reich - Robert Reich. He has worked in several administrations as both an expert and an advisor. He knows where the skeletons are buried.

She Who Stirs the Storm - Gloria Horton-Young. A lyrical poet, a political firebrand, just awesome.

The Signorile Report - Michelangelo Signorile adds the written word to his work at SiriusXM Radio.

The Social Contract with Joe Walsh - Joe Walsh. Another Republican insider who is now on the side of decency and democracy. I’ve come to rely on his humility and his honesty.

Special Intelligence - Malcolm Nance. This outspoken former intelligence officer is a never-miss.

The Status Kuo - Jay Kuo mixes solid political commentary and legal analysis with humor and wit.

Steady - Dan Rather and company. ‘Steady’ is a comfort in troubling times.

Thinking About… - Timothy Snyder on democracy. He sets the bar, bar none.
